How to Prepare for Your Allergy Test
Covered below are the steps you'll need to take to prepare for your allergy test.
Initial Preparation
To ensure your results are accurate, it's important to carefully review the list of medications that may interfere with testing. We will provide you with these details ahead of your appointment. Be sure to follow the instructions on when to stop taking any medications that could affect your results.
If the medication in question wasn't prescribed by your ENT specialist, contact the prescribing physician to confirm whether you may safely stop taking it before the test.
Special caution is required if you take any Beta Blockers. These medications interfere with emergency treatments we may need to use in the rare event of a severe allergic reaction. For your safety, patients taking Beta Blockers cannot receive allergy injections. If you are on one of these medications, consult your prescribing doctor about switching to a safer alternative before testing begins. If that's not possible, we'll discuss other options such as sublingual immunotherapy or medical management.
Additionally, please avoid receiving any injections or vaccinations for at least 48 hours before your allergy test.
Two Weeks Prior to Allergy Testing
Roughly two weeks before your scheduled appointment, a member of our Allergy Team will text you a list of medications to avoid leading up to your test. If you have any questions or concerns, we strongly encourage you to reach out to our office before the day of your test.
Please notify our team if any of the following apply:
- You're currently experiencing respiratory illness or symptoms
- You have an active infection, fever, or are taking antibiotics
- You are pregnant
These conditions may affect your ability to safely undergo testing and may require rescheduling.
The Day of the Test
To ensure your test runs smoothly, follow these simple guidelines on the day of your appointment:
- Avoid all caffeinated beverages prior to your test
- Take a shower in the morning, but do not use any perfumes, colognes, or scented lotions or products
- Do not smoke or use tobacco products for at least 4 hours before your test
Following these steps will help you get the most accurate results and ensure your safety during testing.
